A sweet and satisfying scene was lived in Houston’s Sunnyside Park, this past weekend, when thousands of people gathered to enjoy the 2006 Chocolate Bayou Festival. Aside from the event's usual fun-loving spirit, this year, attendees also found a wealth of information about the Houston Airport System (HAS).
HAS was one of the main attractions at this community based event that celebrates the history, heritage, art and culture of Houston’s historic Sunnyside neighborhood.
The Chocolate Bayou Festival featured art, fashion, music, games and information.
Hundreds of people stopped by the Houston Airport System booth to ask questions ranging from job inquiries to details on security measures at the airports.
The festival is spearheaded by Houston City Council Member Ada Edwards of District D. The festival generates funds to establish scholarships for Houston area youth, with emphasis on those from the Chocolate Bayou neighborhoods.
The celebration included a tribute to the Sky Ranch Flying Service, the first black-owned and operated airport in the City of Houston, the State of Texas and the United States of America.
Three members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen flying unit, renowned for their bravery and valor during World War II, relocated to Houston after the war and established a flight training program, charter flying and cargo services facility and located it on Reed road in 1946. |
