The Houston Airport System’s 30-minute TV show, “Houston Airports Today,” received the distinguished Pegasus Award of Excellence.
The episode selected for the national recognition was a tribute to the 40-year history of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), which is the eighth largest airport in the United States and provides non-stop flights to more than 60 countries and 100 cities in the U.S.
The show includes segments about the airport’s opening ceremony in 1969; a tribute to former U.S. Congressman Mickey Leland, who is the namesake of IAH’s Terminal D; and the behind the scenes story of how Houston became the first airport in the U.S. with its own train system.
“I am proud of the team who produced this show, which was one of the cornerstones for our 40th anniversary of George Bush Intercontinental Airport,” said Rob Wigington, deputy director of MCCA. “Our city has grown over the past 40 years and Bush Intercontinental helped spark international travel as it brought the space city into the sonic jet age. We were excited to be able to capture the significance of how our global gateway serves Houston’s needs.”
The TV program was produced in-house by the Houston Airport System marketing, communications and community affairs division (MCCA). The show’s executive producer, public relations manager David Hebert, wrote and shot the video for the program. The TV show is hosted by public relations specialist Darian Ward. |

Other contributors included public affairs and communications director Roxanne Butler and media relations manager Marlene McClinton. Freelance videographer Luis Perez and freelance editor Shane Finley assisted in the TV production.
Much of the historic information could not have been included without the extensive research efforts of HAS operations coordinator, David “Hoss” Robertson.
“Our team was passionate about telling the story of how Bush Intercontinental first took off in 1969. While we were all kids back then, it gave us a great appreciation for how far air travel has come over the past 40 years,” said Butler. “It was moving to have received national recognition and we hope this award encourages even more people to watch the 40th Anniversary show, which is always available on fly2houston.com.”
“Houston Airports Today” airs weekly on KTBU-TV Channel 55 on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. and is intended to keep the public informed on new developments within the system’s three airport facilities. The anniversary special is also airing on KHOU-TV’s Hi-definition channel.
