The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded the Houston Airport System $8.8 million in grants that will reduce emissions up to 60 percent at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
The grants, one for $5 million and another for $3.8 million, are the two largest single “green grants” the airport system has received from the FAA Airport Improvement Program.
The money will be used to purchase and install solar panels, heaters and chillers in the airport’s central operating plant, which controls the air-conditioning systems in all five terminals. The upgrades will replace the gas-powered steam generation system.
“This is cutting-edge technology for the central plant,” says Eric Potts, interim director of aviation for the City of Houston. “We’re one of the first airports to submit to this type of grant.”
