Want to wing it from the Gulf Coast of Texas to Quebec? Right now, you’ve got to change planes. That’s a given. The skyscape should change November 30. That’s when Air Canada Jazz says it will launch nonstop service from Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) to Montreal’s Trudeau International (YUL).
This is a once-daily deal, and Jazz is using a Canadian-built Bombardier CRJ-705 on the route. That’s a regional jet. This rapier-like CRJ, however, is fitted not just with coach seats, but Executive Class as well.
Gone are the go-go days when airlines added routes like crazy. They’re a lot more cautious now. A trio of things should make this route work: connectivity, convenience, and the fact there's just one player in the market.
Air Canada is already a member of the Star Alliance. Houston-based Continental Airlines will be by the time this flight gets off the ground. That makes for good connections at either end – at IAH or YUL.
Convenience comes in on both ends too. Southbound, you clear US Customs and Border Protection in Montreal, before you get on the airplane. That means when you get to Houston it’s like connecting to any other domestic flight.
Zoom, zoom.
