Four students win scholarships
The annual Airport Appreciation Scholarship gives students a start at the rest of their lives.

More than 100 people attended the annual Airport Appreciation Scholarship Luncheon hosted by the Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the North Houston Association on June 4.

The scholarship money is raised by several sponsors and funds made at the IAH Airport Festival that celebrates the success of George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

At the event which honored four area high school students with an interest in aviation, Eric Potts, Houston Airport System (HAS) interim director delivered a special message to students and their parents about “winning” in the game of life.

“This community, with the award of these scholarships is helping you overcome a challenge. We are here to recognize you students as winners for your hard work, for winners usually work harder,” encouraged Potts. “Continue to be a winner. We as human beings have a need to constantly better ourselves, that’s what life is all about. Finding ways to make a better you, as you experience all the goodness and beauty that life has to offer.”

Mark Moran, executive vice president of Continental Airlines spoke about the long history between Continental and the Houston Airport System.

“It’s good to be here with a group of friends that recognizes the importance of IAH and Continental Airlines, both our past and future,” said Moran. “I congratulate the scholarship recipients and wish them luck.”

The future of aviation. Four area students received scholarships to pursue their careers in aviation. 

The students each received a $1500 scholarship, two of them with great significance.

One special scholarship was given of news reporter, Barbara Olson, who died in the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon. Karen Durand of Carl Wunsche Senior High in the Spring, Texas, received this honor as it was presented by city council member Toni Lawrence, who was Olson’s sister.

Another scholarship winner, Jacobie Hollins of King High School in Sheldon, Texas, was honored with the Ernie DeSoto Scholarship. DeSoto was a long-time and well respected Houston Airport System employee. His wife, Cynthia DeSoto, presented the scholarship in honor of her late husband.

Other scholarship awardees included Abbey Keister of Kingwood High School in Humble, Texas and Phuong Lam of Klein Collins High School in Klein, Texas.
