For horsepower enthusiasts, it was a dream come true.

The 2009 Aeros & Autos event, held at Ellington Airport (EFD) on May 9, offered both pilots and drivers a chance to flex some serious muscle.

“When you first walk in, it feels like you’re walking on to the set of some action movie,” said Tim Hurston, an aviation fan. “You’ve got jets and vintage cars everywhere you look, and it’s really an awesome sight.”

That “awesome sight” included everything from hot rods to low riders and just about everything in-between.

Auto-aficionados provided the four-wheeled displays, while a host of organizations and entities provided the winged attractions.

Static displays were provided by the United States Coast Guard, NASA, Collings Foundation, the Commemorative Air Force and the Houston Police Department.

“What’s interesting is how you can see the progression in both the cars and the planes,” said Neil Derouen. “You can see an aircraft from the twenties or thirties sitting right next to a modern day jet and it’s pretty obvious how far we’ve come.”

And there was plenty to do, even for those people not captivated by speed and power.

The event featured live music, delicious food and plenty of activities for the kids.

Throughout the day, children could be found lining up for activities ranging from face-painting to rock-climbing.

Those behind the event say it’s the result of amazing teamwork and commitment to the community.

“We take phenomenal pride in our airport,” says Brian Rinehart, Ellington Airport manager, “We have a dedicated staff and lots of volunteers.”

Aeros & Autos. The family-fun event raised money for two worthy organizations.

And once again those volunteers have turned their dedication and hard work into direct assistance for two deserving charities.

The 2009 Aeros & Autos event raised funds for the Texas Lions Camp and the Helping a Hero Program.

The Texas Lions Camp is a residential camping facility for children with physical disabilities, type 1 diabetes and cancer, while the Helping a Hero Program focuses its attention on providing support for military personnel severely injured in the course of serving their country.
