Off to another record-setting year
Just one month after closing 2006 with a record-breaking 51 million passengers served, the Houston Airport System (HAS) is kicking off 2007 with significant increases in international passenger and air cargo traffic.
Total freight poundage for the three-airport-system grew by more than 6.7 percent year-over-year through the first month of this New Year. Total passenger traffic for HAS increased by 7.1 percent – while international passenger traffic grew by 3 percent, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2006.
Accounting for these significant increases were frequency and capacity upgrades by several of the airports’ carriers and new all-cargo service by China Airlines and Korean Air.
Some of the top-performing passenger airlines include Aeromexico, with a 32 percent year-over-year increase; Lufthansa, with an increase of 24.4 percent; and Air France, with an increase of 22 percent.
International regions served by IAH for cargo service also registered impressive growth. Cargo poundage to Asia, Africa and Australia combined grew by 24 percent in January 2007. Not far behind was freight poundage to Central and South America with a year-over-year increase of 11.5 percent for the month.
Among the carriers with the most registered growth in air cargo were Aeromexico, with a year-over-year increase of 70 percent; Air France, up 37 percent; and KLM, with an increase of 12.5 percent.
