The Department of Transportation just gave Continental Airlines tentative approval to fly non-stop from its Bush Houston Intercontinental (IAH) hub to Rio de Janeiro (GIG), beginning this summer.

Travelers hoping for cheap flights to Rio can start their travels in New Orleans (MSY) and connect on a Rio flight in Houston.

Continental intends to fly a two-class Boeing 767-200 on the Latin route. It sports 25 BusinessFirst, and 149 economy seats.

Rights to fly the New Orleans-Houston-Rio de Janeiro route are still pending final government approval.
