A group of Chinese air traffic control managers landed in Houston for some basic training. The lesson plan included two weeks of specialized aviation curriculum, which was hosted by the Houston Airport System (HAS) through the non-profit group known as HAS Development Corporation.
The Runway Safety Management program trained 22 aviation managers from 19 air traffic management centers based in China.
“This is the first time we've had major involvement from the Federal Aviation Administration. We also reached out to Continental Airlines, Houston TranStar and others,” says Kelly Hu, senior executive officer to the director of the Houston Airport System. “The comprehensive training was the result of great partnerships and the response was overwhelming.”
HAS coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to provide instruction on controlling aircraft on the ground and runway safety.
The training included visits to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), the FAA’s Terminal Radar Approach Control known as “TRACON”, the Air Route Traffic Control facilities, Houston TranStar, Hooks Airport, William P. Hobby and Ellington Airports.
“The air traffic at Houston Airports is controlled very well. The ground and ramp personnel are professional and efficient,” says Zhang Zhijun, who trains air traffic controllers for the Civil Aviation Management Institute of China. “We have all enjoyed our stay in Houston and the training.”
Hu adds, “The group was intrigued by our airport operations, management philosophy, and partnerships, which they believe enriched their experiences, and broadened their vision of HAS and Houston.”
The Chinese aviation professionals even got a chance to see Houston’s hometown airline Systems Operations Coordination Center where Continental Airlines directs worldwide flight operations.
The visit concluded with a graduation ceremony for the Chinese delegation. |
