It’s quickly become one of Houston’s most exciting and unique events and on Saturday, March 7th at 8 a.m., the Mutt Strut and Runway Race makes its long-awaited return.
After getting disrupted by Hurricane Ike in 2008, the Houston Airport System (HAS) and the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) are once again ready to team up and spearhead another exciting event.
“It’s really amazing how popular this event has become in a relatively short period of time,” says Lenore Herman, race co-chair for the Houston Airport System. “I think it’s the unique setting and the cause behind the event that really gets people motivated.”
That cause is assisting abused and neglected animals living in and around the Houston area.
Once a year, participants are allowed to walk and/or run near one of the five runways located at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), all the while raising funds for the Houston SPCA.
The 2009 event also marks the second year that that dogs are allowed to participate in the race as part of the community outreach effort.
While dogs are the only pets allowed at the Mutt Strut & Runway Race, the Houston SPCA will have plenty of other animals that are available for adoption, including horses and cows.
“This race is special because it helps everyone,” says Meera Nandlal, Houston SPCA public relations manager. “You get some exercise, bonding time with your dog plus you’re helping homeless and abused animals find a loving home.”
The entire course is 3.1 miles where participants can walk or run it alone, with their pet(s) or with a team. |
