Emirates announces new air service to Houston
Houston is only months away from historic air service between Bush Intercontinental Airport and Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. The airline has announced it will begin the new passenger service in December of 2007, with flights three times a week from Bush to Dubai and plans to follow up with daily service by February 2008. Love is in the air, sweet hearts tell us their stories of finding 'amore' at the airport and Ellington Field is breaking concrete and bringing in loads of new business opportunities. We'll capture it all, including the new forest and giant boots at IAH, on the next edition of Houston Airports Today - available on Channel 55, "The Tube," every Saturday morning at 9am and every Wednesday at 7am, 1pm and 7pm on the Houston Municipal Channel. Another year, another list of record-breaking traffic figures for Houston's airports
Passenger, air cargo and aircraft operations all registered dramatic year-over-year increases in 2006. Over 51 million passengers were served by George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports last year, marking a year-over-year increase of 6.5 percent - or three-million-plus travelers more. A significant part of those traveling through Bush Intercontinental were on their way to worldwide destinations. Read Story

"Celebrate good times - come on"
And so they did. Today, at William P. Hobby Airport, in the terminal area, quite a crowd showed up to celebrate the 80th anniversary of this Houston landmark. The band was in full swing, refreshments were served and the official logo for the Hobby 80th anniversary yearlong celebration was unfurled for the facility which was opened in 1927. Read Story

Ellington Field making concrete progress
Next month, the inauguration of taxi-lane Kilo is expected to unleash a virtual renaissance for Ellington Field. The first load of 15 inch cement was poured in last month for the much anticipated taxi-lane Kilo project, which is months ahead of schedule. “We’re expecting the project to be finished by late March,” says Mohammad Zaheri, senior project manager for the Ellington Field improvements. “We have five projects underway at Ellington right now and it is very exciting.” Read Story

Her view from 'the doghouse'
For 33 years, the Women Air force Service Pilots organization was a military branch that never existed by all historical accounts. During the course of these three decades the sacrifices made by patriotic American women during World War II were all but forgotten. They were not in the history books. They did not have the benefit of enjoying a veteran status. And most importantly, they did not have any way of vocalizing their frustration. After having served as military pilots from 1942 to 1944 their existence was deemed classified by the United States government and their voice was silenced. Read Story

Preparing for active duty
Before they join the frontlines of defense, members of the 147th Fighter Wing train for combat at Ellington Field. Sniper fire, enemy attacks, hostile takeovers and nuclear/biological warfare were all part of the Texas Air National Guard 147th Fighter Wing’s agenda this past month as more than 900 military personnel prepared for active duty at Ellington Field. The joint-use civil/military airport is home to the Texas Air National Guard, as well as a variety of other U.S. armed forces branches, and this past month it was the site of a simulated battlefield for the 147th Fighter Wing. Love at the airport - all in a day's work
Find the one you love and don’t let them go. Rob and Trey Gentry and Jennifer and Michael Sutton don’t pretend to know everything about love, but they do consider themselves quite lucky when it comes to matters of the heart. After all, they have been living fairy tale love stories ever since they first met at Hobby Airport. Both couples are Southwest Airlines employees and have found their one true love in the workplace. It wasn’t something any of them planned, but they all confess it is the best job perk they’ve ever encountered. Read Story

The eyes and ears of the airport 
At all hours of the night and day, they are the eyes and ears of Houston’s three primary airports. When travelers are worrying about what they might have forgotten to pack or whether or not they will catch a flight, the men and women that work in the Airport Operations division of the Houston Airport System are observing - thoroughly and carefully observing, both inside and outside of the airports’ properties, for any unusual or unsafe conditions or activities. They are not part of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, or of any local police department, but they take their jobs just as seriously. Read Story

Houston's airports going green
“It takes a village to raise a child.” That phrase has been ingrained into the mind of American philosophy and at the Houston Airport System it is the attitude that continues to place environmental responsibility at the forefront of airport development and construction. Though no children are being raised at the airport system, HAS considers it an obligation to care for the environment – for the benefit of all. In doing so, Houston’s airports have implemented a series of new initiatives that aim to keep greenery around the airport growing. Read Story

Saddle Up! It's Rodeo time
Thousands upon thousands of people come to Houston each year to experience what the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has to offer. Although the financial impact of the Rodeo is felt by individuals and businesses directly involved with the organization, numerous outlets throughout the city as well as the entire globe, receive economic benefits from this massive event. Transporting the masses that make their way each year to the Rodeo are Houston’s airports. Read Story

The Houston Airport System wants you
This year, hundreds of positions are opening up at the Houston Airport System and a push is underway to find the best and brightest to fill them. Keeping the sixth-largest airport system in the world running smoothly is a job that requires the assistance of hundreds of employees. According to Arthur Laborde, human resources staff analyst, more employees are needed to handle the operations and technical responsibilities of running three airports. Read Story

Volunteer at Houston's airports
Touching down in Houston goes a little more smoothly for travelers at Bush and Hobby airports thanks to the efforts of airport hospitality volunteers. These volunteers greet passengers, direct them to various areas at the airport, and answer questions about getting to their destinations in the Houston area. Daytime, evening and weekend shifts are available. A minimum commitment of four hours a week is required. Training is provided. Help the United Service Organization (USO) make our men in women in uniform feel at home at Bush and Hobby airports.
