The end of the year marks the holiday travel season as passengers from around the world fly home to visit family and friends.
If you are visiting George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) or William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) to pick up your loved ones, you’re in luck because there’s free parking available to do just that.
Just recently, it’s been easier for customers to find the Passenger Pick Up Waiting Lots at Bush Intercontinental, due to a very large sign that points out where the lot is located.
All around IAH, there are VMS signs or Video Messaging System signs that were purchased years ago and hardly work any more. The original plan was to demolish these signs by the end of the year, but there was another idea in mind.
“When I heard the signs were going to be demolished, I saw this as a great opportunity for IAH to do some advertising for the efficient amenities and services that are offered at the airport,” says John Bowling, IAH graphic designer. “Our Physical Plant Maintenance division does an outstanding job creating each and every sign passengers see in and around the airport and I knew they’d be a perfect fit to get this job done as well.”
The initial sign that is being used to show customers where the lot is located stands 11 feet tall and 24 feet wide. Some of the characters are up to two feet tall, which makes it very easy for customers to find.
The Passenger Pick Up Waiting Lots are designed to save customers gas and time, plus cut down on stress, when picking someone up when their flight arrives into Houston.
“We understand that coming to the airports during the travel season can be difficult for some people, especially if they are not familiar with where the terminals are located,” says Jesus Saenz, IAH customer service manager. “We strive to make the process of coming to the airport as pleasant as possible for all of our visitors and I believe the Passenger Pick Up Waiting Lots do just that.” |

The lots eliminate the need for circling the airport repeatedly if your arriving party is later than expected. Plus, the more people that use the free parking, the less traffic there is on the roads and less pollution in the air.
After arriving passengers collect their luggage from baggage claim, they should use their cell phones to call and alert their party that they are ready to be picked up.
When traveling to the terminal to pick up passengers, make sure you follow the signs that are marked “Arrivals” and not “Departures.”
The lots are opened every day, all day long and are routinely under the supervision of a security officer.
“We saw how effective the Passenger Pick Up Waiting Lot was at IAH and we decided to have the same useful amenity available for Hobby guests as well,” says Edelana Van Marter, Hobby Airport customer service manager. “It will definitely free up some spaces in the terminal garage and around the terminal entrances.”
While waiting at the lots, you can also obtain flight information by calling the Houston Airport System’s Flight Information Hotline at (281) 230-7000.
The IAH lot is located off of Will Clayton Parkway and the HOU lot is located off of Airport Boulevard. All you have to do is follow the purple signs.
