Welcoming visitors to Houston takes more than just being Houston Friendly; safety comes into play. Most of Houston’s visitors arrive by one of nine runways at either George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) or William P. Hobby Airport.

In order to keep these runways safe, it is necessary to follow Federal Aviation Administration rules and rehabilitate the runways.

One of the 10,000 foot runways, 9/27, was closed on September 26th to allow for the reconstruction project.

During the next few months, IAH will be rehabilitating the runway, rerouting all air traffic to the other four runways at IAH.

The entire construction project will cost $35 million. $27 million will come from the federal government and the remaining $8 million will come out of the Houston Airport System budget.

With the rehabilitation, the lifespan of the new runway surface is expected to be more than two decades.

Runway 9/27 will re-open in January 2009.

Airlines that operate at IAH are pleased that the runway will re-open in time for the Spring Break peak-travel period.
