Living in such a busy city like Houston, it’s difficult for pet owners to find open spaces for dogs to get out and stretch their paws. Another subject on animal lovers’ minds is the prevention of cruelty to animals.

However, with the announcement of the second Mutt Strut & Runway Race, on Saturday, March 7, 2009, the Houston Airport System (HAS) and the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) are teaming up to offer all animal lovers and their dogs to do both in one fun-filled event.

While they walk, strut or run alongside one of George Bush Intercontinental Airport’s five active runways, participants at the second annual Mutt Strut & Runway Race will be raising funds for the Houston SPCA. This will be the second time that dogs are allowed to participate in the race as part of this community outreach effort.

"The first annual Mutt Strut & Runway Race, last year, was a tremendous success. People came out in higher numbers than in previous years and they brought their pets with them for the first time," says Lenore Herman, race co-chair for the Houston Airport System. "After watching how much everyone enjoyed themselves we knew we had to make this a regular addition."

Previously known as the Runway Race for Life, last year's Mutt Strut & Runway Race raised over $150,000 for the local SPCA. During the actual event, one runway is closed and participants are able to walk, strut or run alongside the aircraft activity taking place on the other four active runways.

The entire course is 3.1 miles where participants can walk or run it alone, with a pet or with a team.

In addition to the fun family activities featured at the first annual event - including a mobile zoo exhibit, live music, great food and prizes and 2009's Mutt Strut & Runway Race will have areas set aside that are only people friendly.

Favorites such as the best dressed dog competition will be making a return, as will new entertainment such as the "Ask the Behaviorist" booth. Here pet owners will be able to consult a professional animal behaviorist about any of their pet's unusual habits.

"The opportunity to run, walk or strut alongside moving aircraft provides a rare opportunity for the general public," says Rick Vacar, director of aviation for the Houston Airport System. "It is a side of the aviation industry that most people don't often get a chance to observe. For us it is also a unique opportunity to let the community know how valued their support and well being are to us."

By joining in on the fun of the Mutt Strut & Runway Race, you can help animals of all sorts that are currently living at the Houston SPCA.

Although dogs are the only pets allowed at the Mutt Strut & Runway Race, the Houston SPCA has plenty of other animals that are available for adoption including horses and cows.

“We encourage everyone to come out to the second Mutt Strut and Runway Race because it helps everyone. You get some exercise, bonding time with your dog plus you’re helping homeless and abused animals including horses, ferrets, cows, fish and so much more find a loving home,” says Meera Nandlal, Houston SPCA public relations manager. “We’re really grateful for the help of the Houston Airport System and VCA hospitals, one of our biggest sponsors in getting this event going.”

The tarmac at George Bush Intercontinental Airport will be open to the public, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday March 7, 2009 for the Mutt Strut & Runway Race. Doors will open at 6:30 a.m. for pre-race activities.

Pre-registering for the event means not having to pay an entrance fee. For more information about the Mutt Strut & Runway Race please Click Here.
