Growth at HAS continues with increase of passenger and air cargo traffic

Another 5 million travelers passed through Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports in July of 2008. Propelling this growth are new carriers such as Emirates and Singapore Airlines, as well as more traditional airlines like TACA and British Airways, which have all seen considerable growth during the same month.

Through the first seven months of 2008, the Houston Airport System (HAS) has served more than 31 million passengers – 5 million of these were international travelers.

Particularly popular in 2008 have been international regions such as Central and South America combined; Europe; and Asia, Africa and Australia combined, which have all seen significant year-to-date respective increases of 11.3 percent, 10 percent and 6.2 percent in passenger traffic. Overall international passenger traffic in Houston has increased by 6.2 percent through July 2008.

William P. Hobby Airport continued its upward climb toward a record 9 million passengers in 2008, by adding another 860,000 travelers to its register of passengers served in July 2008. Year-to-date total passenger traffic through Hobby Airport has increased by 5.6 percent, in comparison to the same timeframe in 2007.

International air cargo traffic also continued registering significant growth through the first seven months of 2008. Overall international air cargo shipments have increased by 6.7 percent year-over-year through the month of July.

The air carriers with the most significant growth in air cargo traffic during the month of July 2008 were TACA, Cargolux and Burlington Air Express, with respective year-over-year increases of 24.4 percent, 13 percent and 9.2 percent, all in comparison to the same timeframe in 2007. The international regions with the most significant growth in air cargo shipments during the same month were Mexico; Asia, Africa and Australia combined; Central and South America combined; and Europe, with respective year-over-year increases of 21.5 percent, 13.5 percent, 11.6 percent and 4.2 percent.
