It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, and finding a good place to have your dogs stretch their paws is not always an easy task. Even more complicated is the task of preventing all cruelty to animals.
However, at the second annual Mutt Strut & Runway Race, coming up Saturday, October 11, 2008, the Houston Airport System (HAS) and the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) are offering all animal lovers and their pets the opportunity to do just that.
While they walk, run or roll alongside one of George Bush Intercontinental Airport’s five active runways, participants at the second annual Mutt Strut & Runway Race will be raising funds for the Houston SPCA. This is the second year that dogs are allowed to participate in the race as part of this community outreach effort.
“The first annual Mutt Strut & Runway Race, last year, was a tremendous success. People came out in higher numbers than in previous years and they brought their pets with them for the first time,” says Lenore Herman, race co-chair for the Houston Airport System. “After watching how much everyone enjoyed themselves we knew we had to make this a regular addition.”
Previously known as the Runway Race for Life, last year’s Mutt Strut & Runway Race raised over $100,000 for the local SPCA. During the actual event, one runway is closed and participants are able to walk, run or roll alongside the aircraft activity taking place on the other four active runways. The entire course is 3.1 miles.
In addition to the fun family activities featured at the first annual event – including a mobile zoo exhibit, live music, great food and prizes – this year’s Mutt Strut & Runway Race will allow canines to complete the entire course.
Favorites such as the best dressed dog competition will be making a return, as will new entertainment such as the “Ask the Behaviorist” booth. Here pet owners will be able to consult a professional animal behaviorist about any of their pet’s unusual habits. |
